Sometimes, callers are interested in our lives. They may ask questions about us. “Less is more” is a good general rule when it comes to self-disclosure on the crisis lines. “How old are you?” “What is your religious background?” “Do you believe in GOD?” “Have someone you loved killed themselves?”
These are common questions counselor get on the crisis lines. Please refrain from thoughtlessly answering them. Also, ignoring the question is not very helpful.
Saying, “This call is about you, not about me” may seem abrupt and dismissive.
It is appropriate to respond to their question directly, even if you are telling the caller you will not answer the question. Often times, what is more important than the question itself, is the meaning behind the question.
• “I may answer the question. Before I do, I am wondering why you are asking?”
• “How will knowing my religious beliefs make this call more meaningful?”
Skillfully navigating direct inquiries, and avoiding self-disclosure, can lead to a deeper understanding of the caller and the caller’s needs.
