Updates from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

New York State Office of Mental Health and Huffington Post Create Joint Campaign: Stronger Together
First, please take note of this joint effort between the NYS OMH and Huffington Post, the page and campaign  #StrongerTogether. This campaign weaves together the individuals, families, survivors, advocates and providers who know and live with the realities of suicide, and the Lifeline was asked to participate. Our own John Draper wrote the featured article, "We Can Prevent Suicide." You can also watch the video John made for our "PreVENTable" Video Campaign.

LIFELINE Launches "PreVENTable" Video Campaign
The Lifeline launched the "PreVENTable" campaign on Monday. The purpose of the campaign is to educate the nation and promote one simple message: Suicide is PreVENTable. The campaign will activate everyone and anyone to promise their friends, family and community to talk, vent, and let it out (frustrations, crisis, discouragement, trials).

To further promote the message, we're encouraging the Lifeline community of over 160,000 Facebook fans to create short videos that shares a hopeful message and upload it to a variety of social media platforms. We would love for you to create your own video and share with your friends and family (and the Lifeline!) in order to build momentum. Here's what you do:

1) Shoot a short (15-30 second) video, record a message similar to the sample below (with your own personal twist) and hashtag it with the following on Facebook and Twitter: #LETITOUT #suicideispreventable #preVENTable #800273TALK

Sample Script:
"Today, I want to let all my friends and loved ones know: Suicide IS preventable. Here's my promise to you: I will always be here to listen to you, check in with you and just give you the support you need. Talk to me if you're in crisis. The Lifeline is there for you and so am I." #suicideispreventable #LETITOUT #800273TALK

2) Watch some examples from our great Lifeline community!

3) In your post, let your family and friends know that suicide is preventable, and ask them to record and share similar messages of their own.

Please find further guidelines to the videos here, and remember, make sure your video post is set to PUBLIC so others can view.
