WHEN TO ASSESS for SUICIDE
A suicide assessment should be done with almost all callers in crisis. We get a lot of calls from the chronically mentally ill and the majority of the time, the chronic caller is not suicidal. NEVER ASSUME A CHRONIC CALLER IS SAFE. They are at the most risk for suicide. Ask about suicidal ideation if you notice any clues/ warning signs. If you are experiencing any anxiety about a caller, or feel anything in your gut, ask about suicidal feelings. “I hear that you are upset. Are you having any thoughts of suicide?” Below are listed some possible clues. If you hear any of these clues, ASSESS for SUICIDE. When in doubt, ALWAYS ASK!
